Happy New Year

We were out and about in the deep snow of the Northern Fells today. The plan was a 20 km orienteering circuit but conditions weren't really conducive to fell running! It would jhave been far better on skies. With the weather rapidly closing in we made the decision to knock it on the head after about 12km after only being able to find two of the markers under the snow!

There's been a lot of movement of the snow the last few days and there are some very big drifts in the hollows. It's the first time I've climbed through a cornice in my fell shoes! Most of the time I was post holing in knee deep snow as there was very little that would support my weight. There was also plenty of new snow falling and there will be a significant avalanche risk on many slopes throughout the Lakes now.
