Castle Rock & Thirlmere Boulders

Siobhan & Patricia topping out on Slab Climb (S+)

After yesterdays exertions we opted to climb at Castle Rock in Thirlmere today. The short walk in and quick drying rock made it ideal with an inclement weather forecast. MWIS were forecasting showers on strong north eastelies improving throughout the day which is exactly what we got. Despite this Patricia and Siobhan were climbing well and we dispatched Yew Tree Climb (VD), Gangway Climb (VD+) and Slab Climb (S+). After lunch we headed over to the far more imposing North Crag and climbed the first pitch of Zig Zag (MVS+) before an abseil descent. Today I was working for Adventure Peaks.

In the evening I joined John & Neil at the Thirlmere Boulders. This is a great little bouldering area which only makes an appearance in very dry summers when the waters of the reservoir recede enough! The rock is very clean but a mat is a good idea to cover the boulders. We climbed a variety of problems up to V3 before our fingertips began to wear a bit thin.
